Dogs and human beings share a very special bond. We might not be able to communicate with each other using words alone, but you might argue that we don’t need words at all.
Madison Palm adopted Cora the corgi about 7 months ago to be her therapy dog and help her cope with her anxiety. She had no idea that when she welcomed Cora into her life just how special the little dog would prove to be.
When Madison Palm and her corgi Cora were at the airport on a layover, Cora made a beeline towards a total stranger. When Madison asked him if the dog was bothering him he said something that just broke her heart.
“No, not at all,” he said. “I lost my dog last night.” When Madison heard this her heart broke for the man. She was also made keenly aware of just how in tune with people her beloved therapy corgi really is. Just cuddling with Cora helped this stranger tremendously.
“I truly think she has a gift. She knows who is hurting and she knows who needs her,” Madison said. “Once he told me that his dog passed away I looked at Cora and I thought to myself, ‘You are so amazing. How did I get so lucky?'”
Cora’s life hasn’t always been so charmed. Before living with Madison she was kept outside and forced to give birth to litter after litter of puppies. When Madison adopted her, all of Cora’s teeth were rotting and the water after her first bath turned totally black.
Madison didn’t mind at all. She knew that while she was transforming Cora’s life, Cora was transforming her own right back. Cora, as a therapy dog, has become critical to help Madison cope with her chronic anxiety.
“I am blown away by her on a daily basis. Who knew a dog who was unloved for seven and a half years could have so much love to give?” Madison said. “I can’t change her past but I’m doing everything I can to make up for it.”
When we rescue animals from tough situations we aren’t just saving them from a tough life, we are transforming our own lives by adding even more love!
