Practicing basic hygiene is important if you want to stay healthy. That’s why we teach little kids really early on to wash their hands after they use the bathroom.

While hand washing is really all you need to do, some people can’t help but take things a little bit further. Unfortunately, these germ hacks aren’t really doing any good at all.

Public bathrooms can be really messy places. Is it any wonder that everyone has their own special set of hacks to help them avoid coming into contact with any gross germs they might find in them?

However, your hacks for health might not be as effective as you think. Flushing the toilet with your foot might keep germs off your hands, but then you walk into your home with those germs on your feet. Better to just wash your hands.

If you hover when using the toilet to avoid contact with the seat, you’re not really avoiding any germs plus if you’re a woman doing this over time can lead to pelvic organ prolapse.

Stop using paper towels to open the bathroom door. Not only are most of the germs on the handles harmless, but you’re going to come into contact with them anyway when you throw away the paper towel.

If you want to stay healthy and use public bathrooms, you can keep things simple and just make sure to wash your hands with soap and water when you’re done.
